Who founded the company and when?
Star Painting was started in April 1984 by my father David Carhart. The name, Star Painting, came about after my father painted an old Montgomery County farm house and barn. He painted a rolling star hex sign on the one side of the barn. Customers then started referring to him as the "star painter." The name stuck and the hex sign still remains on the barn.

What made you want to start or be part of this business?
My father had always wanted me to be a part in the business. From a young age I began working in the field and learning the trade. After going to college in Colorado for business and culinary arts I decided I wanted to return home and help him continue to grow and run the business.

What makes your family business unique?
The mission of Star Painting is to provide "skilled craftsmen" in painting and wallcovering. Star Painting values bringing the joy of a beautiful and comfortable space to home and office. We commit to delivering what we promise, paying meticulous attention to detail and respecting our customer's time and place. At Star Painting and Wallcovering, we treat all our employees and customers as family. Over the years we have created a very loyal customer base and have maintained working relationships with future generations. We also have multiple employees that have been with the company for 15-plus years.

What are some challenges you've faced working with family members?
Getting to work with my father every day is a blessing and a privilege. We each have our own ways of completing the task at hand but always end up with the same results. Some challenges have been trying to modernize outdated systems with modern technology but I've learned to slowly implement them, one thing at a time.

What do you find rewarding about working with family members?
My father has been one of my biggest supporters for succeeding in owning and operating a successful business. He is the best mentor I could ask for, always has my back and helps with any situation I spring upon him. This has helped grow our relationship personally and professionally.

What is your favorite thing to do together as a family outside of work?
One of our favorite things to do together is play pickleball. We also enjoy going to car shows to display our company 1954 Chevrolet pick-up truck.
