Expertise: Heating & Air Conditioning, Plumbing, Electric

It's as important to be a good neighbor as it is to be a good business, and McHales has served as both.

McHales has served its clients with reliable, clean and responsible work since 1950. Trained in the fields of plumbing, heating and air conditioning, and electric, McHales' team of technicians guide clients through the process of repairing and improving their household needs by providing services that range from drain cleaning and furnace replacements to AC services and kitchen remodeling.Beyond that, its charitable arm McHales Cares has awarded grants totaling more than $50,000 to Bucks County charities in an effort to give back to a community that has given so much to McHales.

House & Home spoke with President Tim McHale about the recent growth of both McHales and McHales Cares, and how this development allows them to continue to serve their community.

In April, McHales Cares celebrated five years of giving back to the community. What have you learned over that time and through those experiences?
In the last five years, we've met some awesome charities that are right in our backyard—and that we didn't even know existed! We found that most charities know one another and have a common goal of helping those in need.

What inspired the creation of McHales Cares, and how has it grown since?
We always wanted to support our community in a bigger way, and McHales Cares enables us to do just that: We give $1,000 to a different charity each month, and are proud to have given over $50,000 since inception. Through this program, we were even able to revamp the Middletown Township baseball fields for the kids and painted the dugouts. So we now have a field named after us, which is pretty cool.

Can you tell me more about your selection process for the organizations you support?
We ask for nominations of Bucks County charities—through social media, our employees, past recipients and people just kind of spreading the word—and, luckily, we haven't had a problem finding different charities. I have to give all the credit to Jenny Griffin, our McHales Cares coordinator: She does a fantastic job organizing it so there's three charities up for voting each month. Folks from our community can vote once per day; whoever gets the most votes at the end of the month wins the $1,000 and the other two charities get put back into the pot for future selections.

You recently celebrated another milestone with the opening of a new office building and training center. What will this space be used for?
Yes! We recently held a grand opening for our new 6,000-square-foot office building and training center. At that grand opening, we had all McHales Cares' charities from last year come out, and we had a veteran-run food truck—the Salty Vet. We gave out T-shirts with all the logos of all the charities on the back and just had a great big party with 100-plus people here. The kids got to play in a bouncy house, the dogs got to enjoy a nice day out, and the charities got to network and share information. This new space will support our over-70 employees as an office space and double as a training center for weekly morning meetings for our plumbers, electricians, HVAC service technicians, and our kitchen and bath remodeling division.

How do you ensure these McHales' home services and remodels act as an investment in a home rather than just another thing to pay for?
McHales is constructed of two divisions: home service, and kitchens and baths. Within the home service division, we're doing same-day HVAC repairs, next-day installs for emergency HVAC replacements, and plumbing and electrical services. Our kitchen and bathroom division is where we focus on design-build renovations, including ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act] accommodations. Adding elements like grab bars, slip-resistant floors and walk-in showers allows senior citizens to remain in their homes by making things both accessible and safe, and customizing the space to their needs. In either case, the project infuses additional value into the home through an improvement in both quality of life and safety.

What separates McHales from other home service providers?
First off, we're going into our 75th year in business and approach each job with that level of combined experience. Another difference is that we're not a big-box store you'll be lost in, and we're not a one-man show: We have our own in-house plumbers, electricians, carpenters, tile centers and painters. Nowadays it's rare to have all of them under one roof.
