House & Home’s 20th Anniversary

IN ANY BUSINESS, 20 YEARS IS A MILESTONE WORTHY OF CELEBRATING. Like most entrepreneurs, Bob Doran launched House & Home Magazine on a gut instinct that it would work. As someone who worked in sales and marketing for several hometown regional publications, Doran took notice of the success happening in the home repair and remodeling industry. “One day it just hit me,” he says. “Maybe I should start a home design magazine?” Of course, when he told his wife, she wasn’t so confident: “What do you know about starting your own magazine?” she quipped. “You’ll need editors, writers, photographers…” Doran simply replied, “We’ll figure it out.”

After creating a prototype, Doran and a friend took copies in backpacks to the Philadelphia Home Show. His friend was promptly caught soliciting and kicked out, but Doran had the last laugh—by the following year, House & Home was the official show guide of the Home Show, and still is to this day.

Doran sold House & Home to Del Val Media in 2012 and remains Publisher Emeritus. “It’s just incredible to think 20 years has gone by,” he says. “It’s awesome to see it flourishing, and with a lot

House & Home has built a reputation as the defining medium for showcasing home shelter trends to homeowners across Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. “We owe so much to the readers,” Doran continues. “Their feedback has helped turn House & Home into what it is today.”of the veteran staff—Darlene Versak, Rochelle Dodge and Gary Edelstein. I often think of how many lives we’ve changed for the better by making their dream home a reality, something they can be proud of.”

WORDS FROM OUR LOYAL ADVERTISERS:
“We were one of the original advertisers of House & Home. In fact, one of our pictures was the first cover. We have stayed with House & Home even though we have dropped almost all other paper advertising (just a small listing in the Verizon yellow pages) because House & Home is focused on exactly what we do, helping people make their house their home by creating the environments they are looking for with the help of companies like ours. The articles make House & Home different from coupon magazines or home magazines, which are just advertising. We feel that that makes House & Home more valuable to homeowners. They are more likely to keep it handy. We look forward to an even longer and happy relationship with House & Home!”—Elizabeth Pesce, Beco Kitchens & Bathrooms

“Plain and simple, I continue to advertise in House & Home because I support local small business and I’m nothing if not loyal. I originally began advertising in House & Home 20 years ago because of how it targets the customer demographic I desire. All these years later, nothing has changed.”—David Carhart, Star Painting and Wallcovering

“I started with Bob Doran when he began the publication. I felt that House & Home reached the same clientele that we were trying to reach. There was some time that we pulled out during the recession, but we are back because I feel it is one of the nicest publications reaching the Main Line area.”—Jay Stong, Salter’s Fireplace Patio & Grill
