Best in the Business
Best in the Business

When Robert Corrao first started working in the family business alongside his father and uncle 40 years ago, Jan Fence consisted of a single truck and, for Corrao, dreams of building a legacy that would last far into the future.

"That truck was our entire world. Looking back, I realized I was practicing the law of attraction long before I had a name for it," Corrao says. "Every night for years, I would visualize this company, imagining how we would grow, how we would reach new customers."

With Jan Fence having now been in business for more than 70 years, it is humbling to see how those long ago visions have turned into reality, according to Corrao.

"I am clear on one thing: I didn't do this alone. Our success is a direct result of our dedicated team. From our project managers and installers to our yard, shop and front office staff—their hard work is the engine that turned my early dreams into the company we are today," Corrao explains.

Jan Fence was founded in 1955, and more than seven decades later, the company primarily serves northern and central New Jersey and Rockland and Orange counties in New York.

"If you have a project located just outside these areas, please feel free to reach out. We often accommodate larger projects depending on the scope," Corrao says.

Jan Fence is different from other fence installers, according to Corrao, because they don't just install fences—they control the entire lifecycle of the project.

"We offer a level of stability that is rare in the construction industry. We aren't a 'fly-by-night' operation. When we install a fence, our customers know we will be here to honor our warranties and support them for decades to come," Corrao says. "That longevity is backed by a full office staff and 14 dedicated project managers, ensuring no customer ever feels like just another number."

Jan Fence boasts a massive four acres of inventory, so materials are ready when the customer is, and cuts out the middleman by buying direct, which passes on savings and quality guarantees to the homeowner. The company also operates its own in-house welding, vinyl and wood shops, meaning custom requests are built from scratch to satisfy exact specifications.

The Pequannock-based company also has a showroom in nearby Wayne, giving the public the opportunity to check out materials before booking a project.

"We believe homeowners should see what they are buying before it arrives on their lawn. Our beautiful indoor showroom allows customers to walk through, touch the materials and see the various styles in person. It takes the guesswork out of the process and ensures complete satisfaction before a single post hole is dug," Corrao says.

As a full-service provider, Jan Fence handles everything from standard boundary fencing to complex automated entries.

"Whether you are looking for the aesthetic appeal of decorative aluminum and wood, the durability of vinyl or the utility of chain-link, we have a solution," Corrao says.

"We also specialize in technical installations, such as tennis court enclosures, guide rails and custom-designed driveway gates equipped with modern automated operator systems for seamless access," he adds.

No matter the project, Corrao says his team helps customers balance style and durability along with budget.

When it comes to the installation process itself, the Jan Fence team aims for a "white glove" experience, which includes:

  • Preparation: This encompasses utility markings and site preparation.
  • Foundation: The installment crews' extensive experience ensures a lifetime foundation.
  • The Build: A key project manager is involved from start to finish.
  • The Final Walkthrough: The homeowner walks the line to ensure satisfaction.

Jan Fence also has recommendations in what to consider for a first-time fence buyer, which is to focus on the "Three P's":

  • Purpose: Is the fence for a visual boundary, like with aluminum or picket fences, or a total privacy shield, such as vinyl and wood fences?
  • Property Lines: A professional survey is highly encouraged to ensure the fence is legally placed.
  • Patience with Permits: Rules are different in every town. The Jan Fence team handles the logistics to help the first-time experience (and every experience) remain stress-free.

The way Jan Fence does business and every decision the company has made along the way is guided by what Corrao calls their North Star: customer service. This customer-first mentality is evident in the company's online ratings, too, with 4.9 stars on Google, 4.8 stars on Facebook and an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

"It shows in our reputation," Corrao says. "We aren't just saying we're the best—our community is."
