Honoring the Past, While Updating to Last
Honoring the Past, While Updating to Last

Having grown up in the family business, Sophia  is well-versed in the home remodeling industry. A third-generation member of Amiano & Son, Design-Build, she serves as the company's award-winning home remodeling designer, combining her years of experience with an unwavering passion for helping homeowners turn their dreams into reality.

We spoke to Amiano to gain some insight on the best ways to approach a remodeling project and she stresses that when adding new elements, it's important to keep in mind the character and the soul of the home. Rather than modernize original elements, she suggests mixing in some updated touches with the new elements you are bringing in.

Some key original elements that help maintain a home's character could include fireplaces, staircases, original doors and doorways, original brick and hardwood floors. "If you can't keep these original elements, replicate or redo them to a similar style so that you are keeping that history. But always consider the original colors and textures of the house when tying in new stuff," Amiano says.

When you are looking for ways to enhance a home's original charm, Amiano further advises clients to be mindful that they are remodeling their house, not gutting it. Matching old elements with new ones you are bringing in can help maintain the character of the home by replicating a similar feel.

"Tie in vintage accessories like fabrics, rugs, wallpapers, drapery, upholstery of furniture, etc. This allows you to keep that 'old' feel while still updating the home," says Amiano.
