Kitchen Tune-Up Announces the Opening of a Design Center

Offering Inspiration and Expertise to Make Any Kitchen Delicious

All are invited to glimpse kitchen trends, talk to the experts, and enjoy music and refreshments at an April 5th open house.

(Frazer, PA) When shipments for their customer's kitchens threatened to overtake their own kitchen, living room, basement, and garage, Malvern couple Jeff and Penny Toren knew their home-based business needed a home of its own.

The couple, owners of Kitchen Tune-Up Main Line, fell in love with a 2,400 square foot space at 391 Lancaster Avenue in Frazer. Months of work have resulted in a space that showcases Kitchen Tune-Ups' ability to revitalize and reuse the best of an existing kitchen, mix in missing functional features or style elements, and create a kitchen that looks and feels brand new – all with less time, cost, and mess than a traditional kitchen renovation. The Torens are delighted to share the space with Kol Granite so that customers can see Kol's and Kitchen Tune-Up's offerings together. "We now have a place where homeowners can come and see exactly how we will put their whole kitchen together," Jeff said.

April 5 Open House Marks Official Grand Opening
The husband and wife team invites the public to take a peek at the new design center, and perhaps do some dreaming about their own kitchens, at a Mix & Mingle Open House from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. April 5. Along with music and free locally sourced food and wine, the event will include a chance to talk kitchen trends with local owner Jeff Toren, and with Kitchen Tune-Up's marketing director, Sarah Eisenbeisz, who is traveling all the way from the company's franchise Home Office in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Attendees may also benefit from a little introspection with Penny, whom Jeff calls "The Kitchen Therapist."

Reusing What Works = a New Kitchen With Less Time, Cost, and Mess
"The first thing people often say to us is, 'I hate my kitchen. I want to gut it,'" Penny Toren said. "When I ask them what they hate, they often say everything. But then I'll ask, 'Do you hate the layout?' and they'll say something such as, 'No, that's fine. But I hate the color and I don't like where the fridge is.'" The first step to solving the problem is to drilling down on what the problem really is, she said.

Jeff Toren is the kitchen solutions guy. He uses a customer's likes and dislikes, functionality wish list, and physical condition of their cabinetry to determine which of Kitchen Tune-Up's services are the right fit.

• The Tune-Up fits customers who are happy with the functionality and style of their kitchen, and would love it again if only it didn't look so dingy and tired. They might have beautiful solid wood cabinets that are scratched and covered with grease from years of use, for example. Kitchen Tune-Up restores them. "We really are bringing wood cabinets back to their original beauty – we restore the wood, repair the color, and we apply a new finish coat," Jeff Toren said. "This is a specialty service – no other company offers this and it is complete in only one day."

• Refacing is for kitchens with good bones – the cabinet boxes are still solid, and the customer likes the layout, but the doors and drawer fronts are in poor shape, hopelessly dated, or in a style or color the customer doesn't like. "We keep the cabinet boxes in place, install all new doors and drawer fronts, and reface the boxes to match. In only three to five days it looks like a brand new kitchen," he said.

• The Refacing Plus falls between those two, when cabinets are in good shape but the customer wants a few changes in layout or design, or some cabinets modified to fit a new or larger appliance.

• A complete remodel option, including new custom cabinets in a new layout, "is sometimes necessary to give customers the kitchen they need or desire," Jeff said. Kitchen Tune-Up offers an extensive number of options and serves as general contractor for the entire process.

Leaving Corporate America but Keeping the Tech Skills
Jeff Toren left a corporate America technology sector job to launch their businesses. The Torens also own an iLoveKickboxing.com franchise in Jenkintown and have plans to open four more. For now, Penny continues to work in regulatory affairs for the pharmaceutical industry while also working on the business projects.

The Torens launched Kitchen Tune-Up Main Line in November 2015 after purchasing three franchise territories, and had a first year ranking among the most successful ever achieved by a new Kitchen Tune-Up location. Kitchen Tune-Up's national Home Office awarded the Torens with the Rising Star Award for 2016. Their team's kitchen transformations have also been recognized nationally by the franchise system, and they have received the national Project of the Month award three times during their first two years in business.

Business Growth, Close to Home
Kitchen Tune-Up now has six employees and has transformed 159 kitchens and counting. It will soon begin offering their proprietary wood restoration service to commercial customers from hotels to law firms, restoring any wood surface with the same techniques applied to kitchen cabinets.

The Torens, who live in Malvern, said even before opening, the new design center has generated a lot of interest – there is a lot of traffic past their Lancaster Avenue location and people have been stopping by to check things out. Chester County is in the heart of their service area, which stretches from Downingtown to King of Prussia to Media. The plethora of older homes with homeowners who desire to update them make the county a great place to do business, they said. Besides, "It's where we live, and it's pretty nice doing most of our business efforts in this area, and now having a store front here," Jeff Toren said.
