Designing a Better Business
Designing a Better Business

When it comes to home design, it's not always easy to envision what a decorative change is going to bring to a room. This is especially true of significant custom changes, such as with window treatments. Despite the best and most well planned intentions, at the end of the day, the new decor may just not jive with the living space.

At Regal Drapes, however, owners Vicky Levin and Nishan Madawala have plans in place to avoid a design disaster and guarantee the perfect window treatment for every room.

"We take the risk out of buying custom window treatments online. We have a full money back guarantee and free resizing," Madawala says. "We like to call it foolproof because that's what it is. We aim to please."

Spurred by their own bad drapery buying experiences, Levin and Madawala started Regal Drapes in 2012. The online company makes all of its custom drapes, Roman shades, valances and pillows at its Morristown workroom, and the high-quality, reasonably priced products are delivered nationwide within seven days of being ordered.

To ensure products are perfect for the intended space, Regal Drapes customers can utilize a special design tool on the website that creates a personalized visual representation of chosen window treatments.

"One of the things that differentiates us from everyone else out there is our design tool that people can use," Madawala says.

Using this online tool, customers can input window measurements, product measurements, hardware choices and even the number of desired pleats on a drape. The design tool then renders a scaled version of the product, and a few clicks of a button can make adjustments with automatic price updates. Customers can open and close drapes on a window, change the wall color and make other changes to help envision the product in their own home. Once satisfied, within two days customers can have free samples of the fabrics in their hands to examine colors and textures.

"It really helps you visualize how something will look in your space," Levin says. "Everything is in scale, so you can see how it's going to look in the room."

In addition to the do-it-yourself design tool, Regal Drapes has an in-house design team that works with customers to fine tune their order. Via email or FaceTime, a designer will connect with a customer to finalize measurements and product choices, or even help the customer with their design project from start to finish.

"Any way you want to work with them," Madawala says, "they will help you out."

The Regal Drapes fabric line is carefully crafted, too. There are silks directly from India and linens that are shipped from Belgium. Levin and Madawala spend a lot of time choosing their fabric vendors, ensuring the fabrics are not only high quality, but are the right types for the products they make. When a fabric is added to the line, it's not only approved by Levin and Madawala, but also by the design team.

"Our collection is curated in the sense that we guarantee if you make the drape from our fabric, it will look good," Levin says. "It will look amazing."

For those skeptical about taking their own measurements, Levin and Madawala reassures they do not need to be. The Regal Drapes website has guidance on how to take these measurements—a "simple process," according to Madawala—and with the company's 100% satisfaction guarantee and free revisions, there's no reason to worry.

"The best part is you don't have to be afraid of getting it wrong," Madawala says. "Say you do get it wrong. Maybe you don't speak to anyone here and you place your order and it's a little bit too long or a little bit too short. We will fix it for you free of charge."

According to Levin and Madawala, a lot of their company policies don't come from a business perspective—they come from a customer's perspective. They want their customers to not only love their products, but their buying experience. They want them to feel comfortable and confident shopping online.

After all, if the window treatments are the right fit, it will elevate an entire room.

"Our designers like to say it's like adding jewelry to a costume. It makes the space cozy. You can bring your own taste into the room with the window treatments. You can completely change how the room is perceived," Levin says. "It makes the house a home. That's what the drapes do."
